Supported Independent Living (SIL) means more than simply having somewhere to live. SIL supports people with disabilities to feel comfortable and secure and helps them live as independently as possible while building their skills and confidence.
Support for everyday life
SIL can provide assistance with many aspects of everyday life, including personal care, preparing meals, cleaning and household tasks, developing routines, medication support, personal safety and building everyday living skills.
But good SIL support shouldn’t be about doing everything for someone. Wherever possible, it’s about supporting people to do more for themselves, make their own choices and develop skills that can increase their independence over time.
Something as everyday as preparing dinner, doing the washing or organising a morning routine can become an opportunity to build confidence and capability.
More than accommodation
One of the most important things to understand about SIL is that it refers to the support a person receives in their home, rather than the home itself.
SIL funding does not cover expenses such as rent, groceries or household utility bills. It is also different from Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), which relates to specially designed housing for people with very high support needs.
The level and type of SIL support required will also be different for every person.
And we think that difference matters.
What makes SIL different at Coral Future Care?
At Coral Future Care, our approach to SIL is shaped by lived experience.
Coral was founded by parents of a young adult who is an NDIS participant. We understand from personal experience just how important decisions about where someone lives, who supports them and what their everyday life looks like can be.
That’s why our approach is never one-size-fits-all.
We take the time to understand each participant, their needs, routines, preferences and goals. We also work closely with families, carers and Support Coordinators to help find the right living arrangement and level of support for the individual.
That might mean assistance with personal care and daily routines. It could mean helping someone develop new household skills, become more confident preparing meals or take greater responsibility for aspects of their day.
Just as importantly, it means recognising when to provide support and when to give someone the space to do things for themselves.
Because ultimately, SIL should support a person’s life, not define it.
Finding the right SIL support
Choosing a SIL provider is an important decision. At Coral Future Care, we provide individually tailored support across South East Queensland, taking the time to understand the person behind the support needs.
Whether you’re exploring SIL for the first time or considering a change of provider, we’re here to help you understand your options and explore what could work for you.
